The young wrist spinner dealt with financial constraints, but that did not stop him from pursuing his cricketing dream. Puthur moved to Thrissur in search of better opportunities in the game, and his family played a pivotal role in shaping his cricket career. Puthur began as a medium-pace bowler, but he soon transitioned himself into a spinner. The 24-year-old rose to prominence when he performed at the Inaugural edition of the Kerala Cricket League for the Alleppey Ripples. He also performed in the Tamil Nadu Premier League before moving into the IPL.

The Mumbai Indians unearthed Puthur's capabilities after finding him at the Kerala Cricket League, and he was eventually brought by the five-time IPL champions for INR 30 Lakhs. He also served as a net bowler for MI Cape Town in SA20 before making his IPL debut with MI.
