1983 World Cup Winner Kapil Dev has expressed his thoughts on the BCCI's strict norms in terms of cricketers' families while on away tours. The controversial norm has sparked a huge debate, with cricketers of the past and present speaking out over it. Kapil addressed that he is in favour of cricketers' families residing with them on away tours but a balanced approach needs to be followed.
In the aftermath of Team India's horrific loss at the Border Gavaskar Trophy series, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issues some strict guidelines to the players' families when they are on away tours. Recently, Virat Kohli spoke over the BCCI's diktat and expressed support for the presence of players' families while on tours. Kapil Dev backs up his sentiments and calls for a need for a balanced approach.
"Well, I don’t know, that’s individual. I think it’s the cricket board’s call. My view is, yes, you need family. But you also need a team, all the time.
"In our time, we used to say to ourselves — not by the cricket board — that the first half of the tour should be cricket, and in the second half, the family should come and enjoy it too. It should be a blend," said the 1983 World Cup-winning captain, speaking on the sidelines of an Invitational event, as quoted by PTI.
The BCCI issued a directive which curbed the players' families' stay during tours. The rules were made official after India's 1-3 loss to Australia, which stated that the family's visits during tours which lasted more than 45 days were allowed a maximum stay of 14 days. In terms of short tours, they were only allowed a week's stay with the cricketers.
"I don’t think people have an understanding of what value it brings. I don’t want to go to my room and just sit alone and sulk. I want to be able to be normal. Then you can really treat your game as something that is a responsibility," Virat Kohli said during RCB’s Innovation Lab summit.
India's next big tour will happen right after the IPL 2025 season when they will be touring England for a five-match red-ball series, starting on 20th June 2025.
