Indian Premier League: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the opening fixture of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Eden Gardens. The match will begin at 7:30 PM IST. In the upcoming edition of the T20 tournament, Rajat Patidar will lead the Bengaluru-based franchise. Meanwhile, the Knights have also named Ajinkya Rahane as KKR's new captain ahead of the 2025 season.
KKR clinched the IPL 2024 title after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Final. On the other hand, RCB's run in the previous season came to an end in the play-off after they conceded a defeat against Rajasthan Royals.
The two giants have faced 34 times in the tournament, out of which KKR won 20 encounters against them. While RCB sealed 14 times against the Knight Riders. Last season, the Kolkata-based franchise won both matches against the Royal Challengers.
In the past four encounters, KKR have clinched all of it over RCB. Meanwhile, in the past seven encounters, RCB have managed to win just one game. The upcoming match will be crucial for Virat Kohli's RCB to make a solid comeback against KKR. Meanwhile, the title defender will aim to dominate RCB at their fortress Eden Gardens.
Even though Kolkata Knight Riders won the title last season, they have to start all over again in IPL 2025. The upcoming season will be different for the Knights as Shreyas Iyer, who led the franchise to their third title win in 2024 has left the side.
Meanwhile, RCB also saw a few changes in their squad during the IPL 2025 mega-auction. Faf du Plessis who led the Bengaluru-based franchise in IPL 2024 have joined Delhi Capitals during the action.
The second fixture between RCB and KKR in IPL 2025 will take place on May 17 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
