IPL 2025: With so much speculation around MS Dhoni 's IPL future, it seems like he may be retained by the franchise. A latest report on Rev Sports claims that the franchise is looking to retain Dhoni but at a lower retention value. The report claims the five players the franchise will retain are Dhoni, Matheesha Pathirana, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad . The CSK management is waiting for the BCCI to announce the retention policies for the second mega auction in three years. It is well understood that CSK is keen on retaining Dhoni, but in what capacity remains to be seen. CSK want Dhoni at a lower price and that can only happen if BCCI bring back the old rule for the retired players. In that case, Dhoni becomes an uncapped player and in that scenario both the player and franchise will benefit.

Teams are racing against time to complete their retention lists as the blockbuster auction for the Indian Premier League ( IPL ) gets ready. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet announced exactly how many players each side may keep. Among the teams, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are especially keen for clarification as the retention rules might be very important in deciding whether the venerable MS Dhoni carries on another season.
Though rumours suggest the BCCI may let teams retain up to six players, including those under the Right-To- Match option, reports show CSK has created a shortlist of five players they want to retain. Ruturaj Gaikwad , Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Matheesha Pathirana, and MS Dhoni himself make up the five players at top of CSK's retention list.
Interestingly, this listing conspicuously lacks players like Deepak Chahar, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, and Maheesh Theekshana. Given Dhoni's possible retirement after the 2025 season, some saw CSK's choice to exclude several very important players as brave.
It is important to note that MS Dhoni is one of the most successful players in the IPL . He led CSK to win 5 IPL titles with the latest coming in the IPL 2023, where they beat Gujarat Titans in the final. CSK fans want their star player to continue and win one more title.
Officials from CSK have also asked the BCCI to reinstate a previous regulation that allowed teams to keep retiring players under uncapped status. From 2008 until its cancellation in 2021, this regulation would allow players who retired from international cricket for more than five years to be considered uncapped. Reviving this rule would benefit Dhoni, who departed from international cricket in 2019.
Looking forward to IPL 2025, Dhoni aims to end his career on a good note after CSK failed the playoffs in 2024. Still, his fate with the squad is mostly determined by the BCCI's final retention rules.
