Ravi Ashwin's Successor as India's Next Top Off-Spinner? Dinesh Karthik Picks Washington Sundar

The 37-year-old off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is in the twilight period of his career. Certainly, he will not be around for a long time. So, who would be his successor? With a number of potential names present in the circuit, veteran India cricketer Dinesh Karthik, who has seen Ashwin closely and also kept against him, picked the bowler he reckons will be the successor. Karthik picked a few potential choices like Pulkit Narang, Washington Sundar and Saransh Jain. But he confirmed Sundar is the choice.

What Karthik said:

“India are definitely looking for a next-gen off-spinner, as in last India ‘A’ series against England Lions, they tried three off-spinners in three matches: Pulkit Narang, Washington Sundar and Saransh Jain,” Karthik told Cricbuzz.

“Sundar is the front-runner behind Ashwin right now. He’s done well in whatever limited opportunities he’s got and I feel he will get his due first before going to anybody else,” the former Tamil Nadu captain asserted.

Sundar up Until Now

The lanky off-spinning allrounder has already represented India in all three formats. He has also tasted early success. Who can forget his crucial contribution in the 2021 Test at the Gabba? He has also been consistent over the years in the IPL. Sundar can also control the new ball and has often bowled the first over in the IPL. The allrounder can also wield the willow and has played some important knocks for his side in the past. 

With the likes of Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel in the mix, Sundar has not got a lot of opportunities in recent times. It would now be interesting to see if Sunrisers Hyderabad retain him ahead of the auction or not.
