'He will play 2027 ODI World Cup': Rohit Sharma's childhood coach reveals plan for his retirement
Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the shortest format straight after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.
Rohit Sharma 's childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, has shed light on the cricketer's potential retirement plans, amidst speculations of Rohit hanging up his boots from red-ball cricket after the World Test Championship (WTC) final next year. While Lad didn't rule out the possibility of Rohit retiring from Tests after the WTC final, he was adamant that the 2027 ODI World Cup is definitely on Rohit's radar.
Rohit Sharma 's retirement plans revealed?
In an interview with Jagran, Dinesh Lad revealed that while Rohit Sharma may consider retiring from Tests due to his increasing age, he is confident that the cricketer will definitely play in the 2027 ODI World Cup for India.
"No, look I am not saying that Rohit Sharma will announce his retirement after the World Test Championship, maybe he will. Because as his age is increasing, it seems that he may retire from Tests. The reason for this may also be that he wants to keep himself fit for ODI cricket. However, I promise 100 percent that Rohit Sharma will play the 2027 ODI World Cup . The type of cricket Rohit is playing is unbelievable," Dinesh Lad said.
Since India's disappointing loss in the 2023 Cricket World Cup final, speculation has swirled around Rohit Sharma 's potential participation in the 2027 edition. Scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, the tournament will see Rohit at the age of 40, if he decides to join the team.
If Rohit Sharma does make the journey to Africa for the prestigious ICC event, he will etch his name in history as the oldest Indian cricketer to ever play an ODI match, breaking a record that is currently held by Sachin Tendulkar, who played his last ODI game for India at the age of 39 years and 40 days.
Rohit Sharma has already retired from T20 Internationals. He announced his retirement from the shortest format straight after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.
