Speculations have been rife ever since Virat Kohli spoke about retirement and his future in the game. Many cricket fans believe Kohli may call time from the rest of the formats just the way he retired from the T20 format after Team India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Virat Kohli is still delivering fine performances in the game. But if he chooses to retire, the star batter might miss out on breaking huge records.

Records Virat Kohli Could Miss Out On If He Retires

Check out the records which Virat Kohli could miss out on if he chooses to retire from international cricket.

ODIs

Most ODI Runs: With 14,181 runs, Virat Kohli is on track to surpass the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's 18426 and Kumar Sangakkara's 14234 run record to become the highest run-scorer. But that opportunity would be lost if he chooses to step down.

ODI Average: Virat Kohli’s average of 57.88* in ODIs and it is among the highest. It might not improve further if he chooses to step down.

Tests

Most Test Runs: Virat Kohli is among the best in red-ball cricket and is a part of the Fab Four of Cricket. With over 9,000 Test runs, he still has a long way to go to reach the likes of Ricky Ponting (13378) and Sachin Tendulkar (15921). But if he calls time, it would mean leaving that unfinished.

Test Centuries: Kohli has 30 Test tons to his name, and he is in the top 15 cricketers who have the highest 100s in red-ball cricket. But if he retired now, he would not be able to catch up with Tendulkar, who has a record of 51 centuries.

Total International Tons

Virat Kohli has 70 overall tons and is not far away from Sachin Tendulkar's landmark feat of 100 centuries in International cricket. But if he steps down now, it would be impossible to go past Sachin's titanic feat.

No More ICC Titles

As one of the most consistent performers for Team India in ICC events, Virat Kohli has a chance to win more titles after the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy titles. But he might miss any further opportunities to add more ICC titles if he retires.

Breaking Multiple Records Set By Sachin Tendulkar

Virat Kohli has broken a lot of records set by Sachin Tendulkar. Some of the most famous ones would be levelling to Sachin's ODI on record in Mumbai and then surpassing it by adding another hundred at Dubai. Kohli has been expected to break many of these records, but retirement would put an end to those hopes.

Will Virat Kohli Come Out Of T20 Retirement?

Virat Kohli recently dropped a huge bombshell on whether he would reverse his decision to retire in the future. Kohli has hinted that there is only one possibility to make that happen. The India Test and ODI batter said that if India makes it to the Olympics Final in 2028, he will come out of retirement for that one match, as he wants to win an Olympic gold medal.

"If India reaches the Olympics final in 2028, might just think of coming out of retirement for that one match. Winning an Olympic medal would be magnificent," Kohli said during a talk session at the RCB Innovation Lab.

It is yet to be seen whether Kohli will reverse his decision, but one thing is assured: the king is not going anywhere soon.
