Virat Kohli has been leading the Indian team exceptionally well in Test cricket. In fact, under his captaincy, India have been the top-ranked Test side from the last three years. Virat Kohli & Co. are comfortably placed at the summit of the ICC World Test Championship rankings with 200 points in four matches and no team is anywhere near them. Just like the previous two Tests, the coin landed in his favour and he decided to bat first which was a 'no-brainer' according to him. Kohli could not make merry as he could manage only 12. However, the double century which he had scored at Pune is now part of a unique feat.

Virat, Rohit and Mayank's new feat

Virat Kohli had scored an unbeaten 254 at Pune before declaring the innings. His score was too much for the Proteas as they faced an innings defeat to lose the series. In the first Test at Vizag, opener Mayank Agarwal had scored 215 which was his maiden double ton and now in the ongoing match at Ranchi, Rohit Sharma also notched up a splendid double hundred scoring 212 which was his maiden double ton as well. Now interestingly, the combined double centuries from all these players were scored in different Test matches of the same series. Coincidentally, all three batsmen also registered their highest scores in the longest format of the game.

India gain command

Rohit Sharma (212) and Ajinkya Rahane (115) were involved in a 267-run stand for the fourth wicket after India were reduced to 39/3 by the Proteas bowlers. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja scored a vital half-century (51) while Umesh Yadav played an enterprising knock of a 10-ball 31 as India declared their innings at 497/9. South Africa in their first innings were reduced to 9/2 before bad light stopped play on Day 2.

Rohit Sharma hails Rahane

"The partnership was very crucial for the team. We have played together for many years and know each other very well and hence the communication between us was extremely good. I am very happy that he made scored a century, he wanted to do it. There is no doubting his ability and he is in great form", said Rohit Sharma at the post-match press conference.
