New South Wales (NSW) and Western Australia (WA) are currently clashing at the SCG in the 10th match of the Marsh Sheffield Shield 2019-20. On Monday, NSW skipper Peter Nevill won the toss yesterday and opted to bat. As the players have headed out for tea, NSW are at 444/8. One highlight of this innings has been Steve Smith's controversial dismissal, which got the star batsman out on 103.

Smith fumes before leaving the field

On the 4th ball of the 121st over, WA's Marcus Stoinis bowled a bouncer at Smith, which the former Australian captain tried to chip past the keeper but failed to connect. WA keeper Josh Inglis caught the ball as an appeal was made and Smith was immediately given out. Smith stood there shaking his head as the WA squad celebrated. Shield cricket does not have DRS reviews so that option was not available for Smith. As the TV replays played, it was evident that Smith had not even slightly connected with the ball which made its way to Inglis' glove. Smith walked away in dejection, looking back at other players and not even raising his bat for the spectacular 103 he had just made.

Solid NSW build a decent total

Although NSW got off to a slow start on Day 1, most of their batters delivered consistently in the first Innings. After openers Daniel Hughes and Daniel Solway got the fifties, Steve Smith came in to bat and applied his experience to get 103 runs off 295 deliveries to prepare in an ideal fashion for the upcoming Test series at home against Pakistan. He was followed by veteran Moises Henriques, who got a quickfire 91. Pat Cummins came near the end of the lineup and scored 52 runs off 64 balls. The team declared at 444/8 as Josh Phillipe and D'Arcy Short walked out to bat to open Western Australia's reply.
