In a thrilling encounter at the World T20, Afghanistan put up a dominant performance, defeating New Zealand by 84 runs. Afghanistan's openers set the tone with a solid first innings effort, highlighted by Rahmanullah Gurbaz's impressive knock of 80 runs off 56 balls. The bowlers backed up the strong batting display, with Fazalhaq Farooqi and Rashid Khan taking 4 wickets each to restrict New Zealand to 75 runs in 15.2 overs. This victory showcased Afghanistan's all-round strength and depth, earning them a well-deserved win in the group stage match.

In their opening match of the 2024 T20 World Cup, New Zealand was bowled out for just 75 runs against Afghanistan. On June 7, the Blackcaps attempted an 84-run chase at Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana, but were unsuccessful.

Afghanistan posted a competitive total, spearheaded by 80 runs off 56 balls from Rahmanullah Gurbaz. With eight wickets taken between them, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Rashid Khan, New Zealand's run chase never got going.

After removing Finn Allen for a golden duck, Farooqi went on to take wickets of Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell during the powerplay, setting the tone. In the middle overs, Rashid Khan assumed control and quickly brought the squad to its knees, bowling out New Zealand well ahead of the last over.

It was one of New Zealand's poorest performances in ICC competitions, with only two batsmen able to reach double digits. Supporters voiced their dismay on social networking site X (previously Twitter) over New Zealand's lacklustre performance.

In a pivotal encounter, New Zealand will play the West Indies on Wednesday, June 12, in Trinidad.
