In the final fielding award ceremony of the T20 World Cup 2024, the fielding coach T Dilip once again addressed the players and team staff in the dressing room and picked the best fielder from the India vs South Africa T20 World Cup final. The special guest of this time was none other than BCCI Chief Secretary Jay Shah. Dilip handed over the medal to Shah, who completed the drill by awarding Suryakumar Yadav.
Suryakumar Yadav gets awarded for taking the match changing catch of David Miller
Suryakumar Yadav came out as the deserved pick as his catch on the first ball of the 20th over turned the match completely in India's favour. David Miller was stuck in the crease as South Africa's last chance of clinching the championship and the situation was tailor-made for him to take Africa past the finish line. 16 runs were needed in the final over. Miller smashed Hardik Pandya's full-toss delivery down the ground. It had the height and the seeming elevation but Suryakumar Yadav miraculously got hold of the ball. The catch is reminiscent of a typical take when a fielder is standing at the boundary line sees the incoming ball and goes for it, takes it, but due to the inertia movement the threat of touching the rope stands and hence had to toss it up only to quickly come back and grab the airborne again.
Suryakumar Yadav has fielded brilliantly in the entire T20 World Cup 2024. He exhibited his quick work in the semi-final against England as well, where he inflicted the run-out of Adil Rashid through a direct hit. However, that catch of David Miller will forever remain etched in the hearts of Indian fans.
Aside from being explosive with the bat, Suryakumar Yadav left an impact in every match of the campaign with his brilliant fielding.
