‘We’ve Got to Overcome,’: Harry Maguire Reveals on What Man United Struggles With After Poor Display
Harry Maguire discusses Manchester United's challenges following a poor display, emphasizing the need to overcome the issues they are facing.
FC Porto and Manchester United settled for an exciting 3-3 draw in an explosive Europa League game. While United's Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund, and late Harry Maguire header guaranteed the goals, Porto's Pepe and Samu Omorodion hit the net. Bruno Fernandes got a red card in the fierce game, which added further drama. With 52 shots taken overall between both sides, the game highlighted offensive ability. Looking to go further in the Europa League, the draw leaves both teams with significant points in the tournament.
Harry Maguire opines on Manchester United’s draw against Porto in the UEFA Europa League
Harry Maguire thought back on Manchester United's dramatic 3-3 draw on October 3's UEFA Europa League against FC Porto. Though first leading 2-0 at Estadio do Dragao, the squad had to come back to guarantee a draw.
After a difficult 3-0 loss at home to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, United was keen for atone. Beginning with a 2-0 advantage in the opening twenty minutes, they started really well. Porto answered fast, however, equalising before moving ahead 3-2 in the second half.
Bruno Fernandes picked up two yellow cards, then in a stunning shift got a red card in the 81st minute. Arriving as a replacement, Maguire found the net in the first minute of stoppage time, therefore giving his team a vital point. Following the game, he spoke to the team's perspective, stressing certain continuous issues within the squad (as reported by Eurosport). Harry Maguire said:
“When you get 2-0 away from home in a place like this, you’ve got to be a little bit more solid and a little bit more secure. There were far too many gaps, too many crosses coming into the box for sure.
“It’s more probably of a mental issue, it’s something we’ve got to overcome. It starts with belief. When we go 2-0 up then concede, does the belief go a little bit between the boys that we can go on and win the game? It’s something that we need to be aware of, something that we need to focus on.
“The boys on the pitch have obviously got together, they’ve got to realise that it’s happened far too many times. They’ve got to realise that every time we concede it’s something that we need to reset and refocus and go back to the game plan that got us the lead in the first place. If we want to be successful this season, we can’t be conceding two goals in as many minutes as we have done this season."
Given the fact that Manchester United has only won 3 games in 9 matches that they have played so far across all competitions, this adds more scrutiny to the situation as the Erik Ten Hag era seems to count its days if things don’t change for United.
