Samsung may be planning to keep the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chips exclusive to the Galaxy S25 series. A new report has said that the South Korean will once again switch to the 2022 strategy where it went all-in on Snapdragon chips for its flagship Galaxy S series. The upcoming Galaxy S25 series could use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chips on all three rumoured models: Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus, and Galaxy S25 Ultra. However, the company’s foldable flagship phones may skip Qualcomm chips and go for Exynos.
According to a report by Hankyung Korea Market, Samsung’s decision to equip the next-generation Galaxy S devices with Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip is based on the demand for high power to run generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) services. The company introduced its AI, called Galaxy AI, earlier this year with Galaxy S24 series, but the next year’s version is likely to bring enhanced functionality and better optimisation – all of which will require more power. Samsung is likely relying on Qualcomm’s upcoming chip to make the Galaxy S25 series more powerful than its predecessor.
Previously, Samsung was reported to be working on a special chip that could handle AI processes, but later reports suggested the plans hit a roadblock. Another report said that Samsung was planning on using a 3nm Exynos chip on the Galaxy S25 series. There was also a word that Samsung was considering using MediaTek chips on the next flagship smartphones. Since Samsung has not officially confirmed what chips will power the Galaxy S25 series, readers are advised to take the report about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip with a grain of salt.
The flagship phones, usually planned for the latter half of the year, however, may use Samsung’s in-house chips. The next generation of Galaxy Z foldable smartphones will likely come with Exynos 2500 chip, currently in development. This could mark a major shift in Samsung’s strategy for its flagship smartphones. While the company has teetered between using Exynos and Snapdragon chips on its Galaxy S series phones, the foldable phones have used high-end Snapdragon chips since their first launch.
The Samsung Galaxy S25 series is expected to be launched in January 2025.
