The city of Ahmedabad experienced relentless rainfall over the weekend, causing widespread waterlogging, street closures, and significant infrastructural damage. The local authorities reported that Ahmedabad received over 86 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period, ending at 6 am on Monday, equivalent to 3.50 inches of rain in a single day.

Weather Warnings and School Closures

The situation is expected to worsen in the coming days, with the weather department issuing a heavy rain warning for Gujarat. In response to the forecast, the state’s education department has declared a holiday for all primary schools on Tuesday to ensure the safety of students.

Amid all of this the social media is flooded with the waterlogging videos from Gujarat’s Ahmedabad and it shows the rain water flooding the streets of the city. A video captures severe waterlogging in the market.

The vehicles can be seen submerged in the water and the speed of life comes at stand still as no one can walk on the roads. Apart from the city the low-lying areas of the village are also submerged because of heavy rains and the state has got alert of floods.

Impact of Deep Depression and Black Dibang Clouds

The continuous rainfall has been attributed to a deep depression that has formed from East Rajasthan to West Madhya Pradesh. The city was particularly affected on Monday afternoon when black Dibang clouds, originating from the Chomer region, enveloped Ahmedabad, creating a dusk-like atmosphere in the middle of the day. This sudden shift in weather led to very low visibility across the city.

Flooding in Low-Lying and Posh Areas

Intermittent rainfall continued on Monday morning, but the situation worsened in the afternoon as heavy rain accompanied the arrival of the Dibang clouds. Several low-lying areas of Ahmedabad were quickly inundated, with even some of the city’s posh neighborhoods experiencing significant flooding. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's control room was flooded with complaints of rainwater entering homes and streets.

Emergency Measures: Vasna Barrage Floodgates Opened

In response to the severe flooding, the floodgates of the Vasna barrage on the Sabarmati river were opened to help drain the city of the excess rainwater. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation as more rain is expected in the coming days.

Residents are urged to stay indoors and take necessary precautions as the weather department continues to monitor the situation. The local authorities are on high alert, with emergency services ready to respond to any further developments.
