7.5-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Western Japan, Tsunami WARNING Issued

Tokyo: A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.5 on the Richter Scale jolted Western Japan on Monday, January 1, prompting a tsunami warning which urged people to quickly leave coastal areas of Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama and Yamagata prefectures. Waves of up to 5 meters predicted for the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa, NHK reported. Following the tremors, bullet trains have been suspended in Japan.  The quake was also felt in Tokyo and across the Kanto area. At the time of filing the article, no casualties were reported.

Earthquake of magnitude 6.3 strikes Japan's Kuril Islands

This comes 3 days after an earthquake of magnitude 6.3 on the Richter Scale jolted Japan's Kuril Islands, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said. According to NCS, the earthquake occurred at 2:45 pm (IST) at a depth of 10 kilometres. The NCS said the epicentre of the earthquake was found to be at a latitude of 44.36 and a longitude of 149.23.

In a post shared on X, NCS stated, "Earthquake of Magnitude:6.3, Occurred on 28-12-2023, 14:45:12 IST, Lat: 44.36 & Long: 149.23, Depth: 10 Km , Location: Kuril Islands, Japan."
