As Russia braces itself for the upcoming 2024 General Election, Czech President Petr Pavel said that the developments in the ongoing Russian-Ukraine war might turn the elections in favour of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In an interview with Czech news outlet Seznam Zprávy, Pavel said that the developments in the Russia-Ukraine war indicate that things will not be favourable for Kyiv, next year. In the past, the Czech President stirred headlines after he became one of the first allies of Ukraine to throw light on war fatigue.

“We have a lot ahead of us, because the development of the conflict in Ukraine shows that we are very likely to see some significant developments next year,” the Czech President told the Czech news outlet. "And the indications so far are that it will not be in the best sense of the word, as we would like it to be," the president warned in the interview which was published on Monday. The comments from Pavel came amid growing concerns in Ukraine after Kyiv's counteroffensive failed to progress in the way the country hoped.

Pavel notes 2024 US Election results can influence the war

During the interview, the Czech leader also noted that the results of the upcoming 2024 US Presidential elections can influence the ongoing war in Ukraine to a great extent. "The anticipation of the elections will also bring about certain changes on the battlefield," Pavel remarked. His comments came days after the Russian President said that he consider the United States as the “only partner for possible negotiation”. However, the Russian President made it clear that the negotiation can only happen after both countries are done with their respective election. Pavel noted that Putin is eying for Trump to win the upcoming elections to make things favourable for Russia. "On Vladimir Putin's side, there is an expectation that if Donald Trump succeeds, he would be able to get along with him regardless of what Ukraine or the rest of Europe thinks, and ... return Russia to the status of a key player," Pavel said.
