As the Russia-Ukraine war continues to escalate, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius gave a grim warning to the European Union that the regional body should prepare for a bigger war by the end of the decade. In an interview with the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Pistorious spoke about the escalating Russian threats and urged European countries to start fortifying their defence industries and adapt to the grievous geopolitical shift.

The German leader pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin poses a bigger threat to the Baltic nations. He urged the European Union to bolster its defence industries and help these countries to do the same as well. “His [Putin's] threats against the Baltic states, Georgia, and Moldova must be taken very seriously. This is not just sabre-rattling. We could be facing dangers by the end of this decade,” Pistorius said. The proclamation from the German politician came after the country signed a historic deal with Lithuania. On Monday, Germany agreed to permanently deploy its troops to Lithuania. This will be the first time German troops will be deployed on foreign soil since WWII.

Germany rebuilding its defence

According to The Euro News, Germany has intensified its efforts to rebuild its armed forces, allocating from a whopping €100 billion special fund established in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "It will take time for the defence industry to ramp up its capacities. We now have around five to eight years to catch up – both regarding the armed forces, industry and society, Pistorius told the German newspaper. When it came to strengthening the European defence collaboration, Pistorius advocated for adding military elements to the Weimar Triangle, an informal forum comprising Germany, Poland, and France.

During the interview, the German defence minister noted how the United States is shifting its towards the Indo-Pacific region. In light of this Pistorius urged the European Union to enhance its security and defence capabilities independently. He even urged the regional body to find alternatives and find European cooperation beyond Europe's borders. “The alternative would be to have no more contacts with these countries and to leave them to the Russians and Chinese from the outset. And that would be even more dangerous,” the German politician concluded.
