An international NGO advocating for the clemency of this woman reported that on Wednesday, an Iranian woman convicted of murdering her abusive husband was executed.
Samira Sabzian, a child bride married at 15, faced domestic violence. Arrested at 19 in 2013, she was sentenced for her husband's murder, according to a press release from the Iran Human Rights (IHR) NGO.
“Samira was a victim of years of gender apartheid, child marriage, and domestic violence, and today she fell victim to the incompetent and corrupt regime’s killing machine,” said Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the director of the Norway-based rights group in a press release.
“A regime that has sustained itself solely through killing and instilling fear. Ali Khamenei and other leaders of the Islamic Republic must be held accountable for this crime”, he added.
At the time of her arrest, she had two young children, one newborn. She saw her newborn for the first and last time when they visited the prison to bid farewell before her execution in Ghezelhesar, located 20 km northwest of Tehran, the Iranian capital.
Amnesty International conveyed its dismay at the execution of the mother of two.
“Samira is the eighteenth woman executed this year in Iran , out of a total of 800 hangings,” said Riccardo Noury, spokesperson for Amnesty International, Italy, as per the reports.
“Iranian laws allow forced and early marriages, do not protect women from domestic violence and then kill them when they try to rebel. Samira Sabzian is the tragic testimony of a system based on the oppression of women, since their childhood”, he added.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights' office conveyed its "alarm" at Sabzian's execution, urging Iran to cease capital punishment.
"We again urge Iran to establish a moratorium on all executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty," they added.
The United Nations previously expressed apprehensions about the "alarming rate" of executions in Iran. As per a November report, the country executed at least 419 individuals in the initial seven months of the year, marking a 30% rise from the corresponding period in 2022.
Total women executed in Iran in 2023
