National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is set to visit China next week in a crucial diplomatic effort to strengthen U.S.-China relations. The visit, scheduled for August 27-29, will see Sullivan meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. This will be Sullivan's first visit to China as Biden's NSA. This high-level meeting is expected to lay the groundwork for a possible final summit between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year.

Sullivan's visit comes at a pivotal time as the U.S. approaches the final stages of its presidential campaign. Both major political parties have adopted tough stances on China, particularly regarding trade tariffs. This visit is seen as a strategic move to manage and potentially ease tensions that have been heightened during the campaign season.

Here is what you need to know

Former President Donald Trump, a leading contender in the race, has proposed implementing 60% tariffs on Chinese imports and has expressed concerns about China's intentions towards Taiwan. Trump has also warned that China might be planning an attack on Taiwan. These statements reflect a broader, more confrontational approach towards Beijing, which contrasts with the current administration's efforts to balance competition with diplomacy.

President Biden, who has emphasized the importance of a stable U.S.-China relationship throughout his term, is preparing for an upcoming G-20 summit in Brazil, where both he and President Xi Jinping are expected to be in attendance. Biden's administration has worked to address strained relations, which have been affected by events such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan in 2022 and the incident involving a Chinese spy balloon earlier this year.

During their last meeting in California last November, Biden and Xi Jinping agreed to restart a military-to-military hotline and collaborate on reducing fentanyl production. Sullivan’s upcoming visit is intended to build on these discussions and further establish the framework for future engagement between the two leaders.

As Biden transitions to focusing more on foreign affairs following his departure from the presidential race, Sullivan's visit underscores the administration's commitment to addressing complex international issues and reinforcing strategic relationships.
