President Vladimir Putin warned on Wednesday that Russia could resort to nuclear weapons if attacked, particularly if the aggression is supported by a nuclear power. Speaking at a meeting of Russia's Security Council with top officials, Putin highlighted proposed changes to Russia's nuclear doctrine that could redefine the thresholds for nuclear engagement.

"It is proposed that aggression against Russia by any non-nuclear state, but with the participation or support of a nuclear state, be considered as their joint attack on the Russian Federation," Putin stated, emphasizing a collaborative threat posed by nuclear powers.

Putin elaborated on the conditions under which Russia would consider using nuclear weapons, indicating that a massive launch of missiles, aircraft, or drones against Russia would trigger such a response. He affirmed that Russia retains the right to deploy nuclear weapons if it or Belarus faces aggression, including from conventional forces.

"The clarifications are carefully calibrated and commensurate with the modern military threats facing Russia," he asserted.

Putin further stated, “There is a basic principle of using nuclear weapon which means using nuclear arms is the last resort. We have always been responsible regarding matters like these because we understand how strong this weapon is.”
