Macron, In Call With Netanyahu, Refuses to Walk Back Arms Embargo Comment
Despite the clear differences in opinion, both leaders expressed a desire to maintain open lines of communication and understanding.
French President Emmanuel Macron has reiterated his opposition to arms sales to Israel in a candid phone conversation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , whilst acknowledging their differing views. The two leaders spoke earlier in what France described as a discussion “in complete frankness and with respect for the friendship between France and Israel.”
The call came after Netanyahu criticized Macron’s push for an arms embargo, labeling it “a disgrace.” However, Macron did not back down, affirming France’s stance.
What did Macron say to Netanyahu?
According to the French president’s office, Macron expressed his continued commitment to Israel’s security, pointing out that France has participated in Israel’s defense against Iranian attacks.
On the eve of the first anniversary of the Hamas attacks, Macron expressed solidarity with the Israeli people, especially the victims and hostages. “Like everyone, Israel has the right to defend itself against terrorism,” Macron’s office stated. He also emphasized that attacks on Israel must stop, whether from Iran or its regional proxies.
It is time for a ceasefire, says Macron
However, Macron used the conversation to call for an immediate ceasefire, stating that prolonging the conflict in Gaza and extending it to Lebanon would not achieve the security desired by Israelis or the broader region. “The time for a ceasefire has now come,” Macron told Netanyahu, stressing the need for political solutions to secure lasting peace.
Despite the clear differences in opinion, both leaders expressed a desire to maintain open lines of communication and understanding. France's position probably won't impact Israel's decision making.
