Palestine, Turkey, Uzbekistan issue stamps to honour Mahatma Gandhi

Palestine, Turkey and Uzbekistan issued stamps to honor Gandhi on his 150th Birth Anniversary. All three countries also praised Gandhi and his contributions.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Palestine, Turkey, and Uzbekistan released a commemorative postage stamp on Mahatma Gandhi on October 2. Honouring his “legacy and values”, Palestinian Authority’s (PA) Minister of Telecommunication and Information Technology Ishaaq Seder released the stamp in the presence of Representative of India in PA Sunil Kumar at a ceremony held at the ministry in Ramallah, Israel. The move comes to mark the 150 birth anniversary of the world leader. Over a year, the Indian Mission in Ramallah has conducted several events to commemorate the birth anniversary of Gandhi which has drawn a huge response from all sections of the Palestinian society, especially the youth.

“Palestine’s issuance of the commemorative stamp comes in honor of Gandhi’s memory, legacy, and values that guided and shall continue to guide the humanity," said Seder, underlining the Mahatma’s principles of nonviolence, values, wisdom, and vision.

Palestine's honor to Gandhi

Speaking on Palestine's gesture for Gandhi, Sunil Kumar said that the country's homage to Gandhi shows the strong historical, political and cultural relations that India and Palestine share. The Representative of India also talked about Gandhi’s significant contribution to human development, stressing that his teachings of peace, freedom, respect, and tolerance are still felt around the world. Earlier in June, the Governor of the city, Jehad Abu al-Asal, said Gandhi is a “real source of inspiration” for the Palestinian society. He added that Gandhi's messages “will continue to inspire millions of human beings” around the world at a cycling event organized in the historic city of Jericho.

Uzbekistan, Turkey also issue commemorative stamps

As per an Indian media publication, Uzbekistan’s ministry of information technology and communications and the postal department has also issued a commemorative Gandhi stamp as a joint initiative. The postage stamp has been published in the form of a postal block, read the Press note of the department. The report further mentioned that the stamp is 52x37 mm in size and bears the image of Gandhi with the backdrop of historic Indian monuments which was designed by Sulaimonova U and the image was sketched by Farmonova S. Similarly, the Turkish postal department has also released a postal stamp on Gandhi. The press release of the postal department of Turkey praised Gandhi saying that he pioneered the independence of the Indian subcontinent, dedicated his life to eradicating racism and discrimination, reducing poverty, making everyone equal and free.
