Hours after Ukrainian officials claimed responsibility for attacking a Russian naval warship in the Black Sea, Russia released a confirmation of the incident. On Tuesday, the Ukrainian Air Force said that it had destroyed a major Russian navy vessel stationed near the Crimean town of Feodosia. The air strike led to a powerful explosion that rocked the region and impacted the Russian Navy fleet significantly.

According to a statement released by the Russian Ministry of Defence, the Naval ship which got attacked in the Tuesday incident was a landing ship called Novocherkassk. The ministry noted that two Ukrainian fighter jets were destroyed by an anti-aircraft fire following the attack. Meanwhile, the Russian-installed governor of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov mentioned that one person was killed and two were injured in the incident. Over the past several months, Ukrainian forces have conducted attacks around Crimea, mostly with sea drones. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy credits those attacks with allowing Ukraine to restore navigation in the Black Sea and allowing the export of millions of tons of grain.

‘Russian fleet is getting smaller’

Before Russia even confirmed that the navy vessel was damaged the Ukrainian forces went on to boast about its might. "And the fleet in Russia is getting smaller and smaller! Thanks to the Air Force pilots and everyone involved for the filigree work!" the commander of Ukraine's air force, Mykola Oleshchuk, said on Telegram. However, the Ukrainian official did not share any imagery of the destroyed Russian vessel. The Tuesday incident has become the first major attack the country has unleashed on Russia in at least four months. In September this year, the Ukrainian forces fired at least 19 drones over the Black Sea and the Crimean Peninsula, the arid region that was annexed by Russia back in 2014. The town of Feodosia located in the Crimean peninsula comprises of a population of around 69,000 people and lies on the southern coast of the region.
