Hospital patient steals ambulance in South Carolina

A patient at a hospital in S. Carolina, feeling well enough, took an unusual turn of action by stealing an ambulance from the hospital's parking lot.

A patient at a hospital in South Carolina, feeling well enough, took an unusual turn of action by stealing an ambulance from the hospital's parking lot, prompting a subsequent police chase.

Around 10:50 a.m. on Friday morning, the Union County Sheriff’s office received notification of the ambulance theft from the Union Medical Center.

A deputy, already in the vicinity of the hospital, attempted to pull over the stolen ambulance but was unsuccessful in doing so, according to police reports.

The driver, later identified as 34-year-old Collier Bruce Simmons from Enoree, fled the scene and drove recklessly on Highway 49, heading towards Lauren County.

The police pursuit of the stolen ambulance persisted as it entered Spartanburg County, with law enforcement working to apprehend the fleeing driver.

The pursuit reached its conclusion in the vicinity of Highway 221 and Parker Road, approximately 25 miles away from the hospital where the ambulance was stolen.

Following the culmination of the chase, Collier Bruce Simmons, the individual who had stolen the ambulance, was apprehended by authorities without any further incident, as per the reports.

Collier Bruce Simmons is facing multiple charges, including grand larceny, failure to stop for blue lights, driving under suspension (DUI related), being a habitual traffic offender and driving left of center.

The reason for Simmons' admission to the hospital remains unclear, adding a level of ambiguity to the circumstances surrounding his presence at the medical facility.
