Mossad chief meets Qatari PM and CIA director to resume hostage talks
Mossad Chief David Barnea met the CIA director Bill Burns and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Warsaw on Monday.
As the ravaging Israel-Hamas war continues to escalate, Mossad Chief David Barnea met the CIA director Bill Burns and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. According to The Times of Israel, the meeting was held in Warsaw on Monday and the officials discussed efforts to reach a new hostage deal with Hamas. Prior to the meeting held on Monday, it was widely reported that the Mossad Chief had met the Qatari premier in Norway on Friday night.
Even the Ynet news site quoted a source revealing that the negotiation would be “long, complicated and more difficult” than the negotiation the one held for the previous ceasefire deal. It is important to note that Qatar was the key mediator in the first hostage deal that saw 105 civilians being released from Hamas' captivity.
Why does the meeting matter?
The meetings matter since these are the first set of interactions between senior Israeli and Qatari officials since the collapse of the seven-day ceasefire deal. Following the Friday meeting between the Mossad chief and the Qatari PM, the source told Axios that this is “just the beginning” of the negotiation process, Axios reported. The last ceasefire deal was derailed two weeks ago after Hamas refused to release the remaining women it is holding hostage.
Days before the three officials met each other, IDF announced that it had “mistakenly” killed three Israeli hostages in Gaza. Shortly after the IDF statement, several family members of the Hamas hostages took to the streets of Tel Aviv and called on the Israeli government to present a new deal. The incident garnered heavy criticism and even postponement of the meeting which eventually took place on Monday.
