World Cup Winner Jemimah Rodrigues Set To Lead Delhi Capitals In Upcoming WPL 2026

WPL 2026: Delhi Capitals named ODI World Cup winner, Jemimah Rodrigues, as the franchise's new skipper for the forthcoming 2026 edition of the  Women's Premier League.

Rodrigues will be replacing Meg Lanning in the role for the upcoming season. Before the WPL 2026 mega-auction, the Delhi-based franchise did not retain Lanning for the upcoming season. Previously, Rodrigues served as Meg Lanning's deputy till the WPL 2025. However, the young batter is all set to embrace a new role in the franchise from the 2026 edition.

Before the mega-auction, Delhi Capitals retained five players, including Jemimah Rodrigues, Marizanne Kapp, Shafali Verma, Annabel Sutherland, and Niki Prasad.

Jemimah Rodrigues has had a stunning 2025. She played a crucial knock in the playoffs and helped India clinch the prestigious Women's ODI World Cup 2025 for the first time.

While speaking about her new role in the Delhi Capitals, Rodrigues said that it is an honour for her to lead the franchise in the upcoming season. She also expressed her gratefulness to the owners and the support staff for placing their faith in the 25-year-old.

“It is an absolute honour to be named captain of the Delhi Capitals, and I am deeply grateful to the owners and the support staff for placing their faith in me to lead this team. It has truly been a dream year for me and my family, winning the World Cup and now being entrusted with this wonderful opportunity at a franchise that has held a very special place in my heart since the very first season of the WPL. I have learned so much over the last three years and have shared some of my best moments with the Delhi Capitals. This team is my family...,” Rodrigues said.

From the very first season of the WPL, Jemimah Rodrigues has represented the Capitals. She played 27 WPL matches and 24 innings, scoring 507 runs at a strike rate of 139.66 and an average of 28.16. She has scored three fifties in the WPL, but is yet to slam her maiden century in the T20 tournament.

Rodrigues has played in 113 T20Is, amassing 2,444 runs, at an average of 30.93. She also scored 14 half-centuries for the Women in Blue. She represented India in 59 ODIs, scoring 1,749 runs with three centuries and eight half-centuries to her name.

The 2026 edition of the WPL will begin on January 9, with the maiden match taking place between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals will take on Mumbai Indians in their opening match of WPL 2026 on January 10, in Navi Mumbai.
