Vijay Has Requested Congress Support To Form Tamil Nadu Govt, Claims KC Venugopal
Reports indicate that the Congress's Tamil Nadu unit will be meeting the TVK leadership in Chennai on Wednesday morning and take a call on the government formation, Venugopal said.
Chennai: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has requested Congress support to form the government in Tamil Nadu, Congress general secreatary KC Venugopal claimed on Tuesday, day after the superstar-turned-politician, who decimated the traditional stronghold of the Dravidian parties in the state, won on Monday.
Reports indicate that the Congress's Tamil Nadu unit will be meeting the TVK leadership in Chennai on Wednesday morning and take a call on the government formation, Venugopal said.
The senior Congress leader maintained that the party does not want a BJP government in the state as the mandate reflected in the assembly elections is clearly for a "secular government".
Vijay had earlier responded to Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's congratulatory message, saying that the two will “prioritize for the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu” beyond politics.
"My sincere thanks to the Honorable Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for the call and kind wishes! We shall remain committed to excellence in public service, and preserving the cultural ethos of our state which requires collective cooperation. Beyond politics, we shall prioritize for the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu," Vijay had posted on X.
Vijay's Options
As per reports, Vijay held a meeting with his newly-elected legislators on the issue of staking claim to form the government, even with a shortfall in numbers. Some sources also claimed that TVK has thought of not bowing down to other political parties while seeking support to form the new government.
The party was in contact with the Congress and Left parties, which have 9 MLAs together. Some sources has also indicated that the TVK had been in touch with the PMK (Pattali Makkal Katchi) as well.
Blockbuster Debut
Vijay, who was earlier written off by the MK Stalin-led DMK as a non-serious, part-time politician, has now emerged as a massive force after his electoral debut by winning as many as 108 seats, stunning all political pundits in the state.
The TVK, which promised to bring about an alternative to Dravidian politics, commands nearly 35% of all votes polled in the 2026 assembly elections. Vijay emerged victorious from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East. The party is just 10 seats short of the required majority to form the government.
