The trailer of the upcoming documentary, Angry Young Men, based on Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar's lives has just been released. The documentary is set to premiere on August 20. This will mark the reunion of the iconic screenwriter duo after their last hit film Mr India in 1987.

Salim and Javed are among the most influential writers in the Hindi film industry, having written scripts for Bollywood's biggest blockbusters in the 70s. Their work not only created a new format of filmmaking but also played a major role in shaping the careers of major actors, including Amitabh Bachchan. However, despite their success, the duo parted ways after Mr India. While their breakup has made headlines for years, the reasons behind it have always been a bit of a mystery.

Why iconic writer duo Salim-Javed parted ways?

Ruling the entire 70s decade, Salim-Javed worked on 24 stories together and some of them are still considered iconic like Zanjeer, Deewar, Sholay, Don etc. Although, they parted ways later, it is suggested that the writer duo did not hold any grudges against each other after the break-up. Over time, Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan have occasionally shared insights about why they stopped working together.

In an old interview, Javed reflected on his split with writing partner Salim, citing the challenges of maintaining a creative partnership. He explained that partnerships in other fields, like a cement factory, are easier to manage because they involve clear, measurable factors, allowing business relationships to function smoothly. Javed further mentioned that as "people become successful and their social circles expand, they naturally grow apart". However, he clarified that there was never any conflict or disagreement over credit or money between them.

Salim Khan's side of the story

In another old interview with ETC Bollywood, Salim Khan opened up about the duo's split, where he shared that one of the reasons for them going their separate ways was Javed's desire to expand their partnership to include writing lyrics. Salim, however, was not interested in this area and insisted on keeping their collaboration limited to scriptwriting, allowing Javed to pursue lyrics independently.

In the interview, Salim also expressed that Javed quickly moved on and worked with other directors like Ramesh Sippy, Rahul Rawail, Yash Chopra, and Subhash Ghai. On the other hand, Salim struggled initially, taking a long sabbatical in London and finding little work upon his return. With a sad expression Salim recalled how, after his return, the phone that once rang frequently now remained silent, highlighting how quickly people forget.

Will Angry Young Men unravel the truth behind Salim-Javed Split?

Even though the duo has separated professionally for some time, they remain in contact. The latest trailer reveals several familiar challenges the writer pair faced. The Prime Video caption hints at their breakup mystery unravelling, sparking fans' anticipation that the legends might discuss their past differences in the upcoming documentary and maybe, move on.
