Odia Actor Uttam Mohanty Dies At 66 After Battling Liver Cirrhosis, CM Mohan Charan Majhi Announces State Honours
Secretary of the Odisha Cine Artists' Association, confirmed Uttam Mohanty's mortal remains will arrive in Bhubaneswar around 11 AM today, February 28.
Veteran Odia actor Uttam Mohanty died after battling liver cirrhosis, per news agency ANI. The actor succumbed to his illness at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram after a prolonged treatment. Sritam Das, Secretary of the Odisha Cine Artists' Association, confirmed that Mohanty's mortal remains will arrive in Bhubaneswar around 11 AM today, February 28. In January, Mohanty was admitted to Medanta Hospital after receiving initial treatment in Bhubaneswar.

Chief Minister of Odisha took to his X handle to express grief. He called Mohanty's death an "irreparable loss to the Odia artistic community." He further stated that his last rites would be performed with full state honours. “Uttam Mohanty was like a guiding star in the Odia film industry. For over two decades, he remained an unrivalled hero in Odia cinema. He was an icon of the Odia art world. Through his acting in Odia, Bengali, and even Hindi films, he elevated the Odia film industry to new heights. His demise is an irreparable loss to the Odia artistic community," his post read.
Who was Uttam Mohanty?
He was a veteran actor who was well known for his immense contribution to Odia cinema. Born in 1958 in Baripada, Mayurbhanj, Mohanty had a deep connection with the culture and traditions of the region. He graduated from MPC College before entering the Odia film industry. His acting journey began with the movie Abhiman and went on to star in over 135 Odia films and around 30 Bengali films, such as Ramayan, Jhiati Sita Pari, Aei Ama Sansara and Bada Bhauja. He has also starred in the Hindi film Naya Zaher. The actor was last seen in the movie Bidyarana released in 2022. Apart from movies, he has also worked in TV shows, such as Katha Kahuthile Saribani, Panatakani, Sara Akasha and Uttardai.
