Veteran Actress-Dancer Madhumati Dies At 87, Akshay Kumar, Vindu Dara Singh, Others Pen Heartfelt Tributes

Veteran actress and dancer Madhumati died peacefully in her sleep on October 15 at the age of 87. The exact cause of her death is not yet known. According to a Paparazzi page, Viral Bhayani, the funeral rites are taking place today at 4:30 pm at the Oshiwara crematorium.

Among the first to offer their heartfelt condolences were her celebrity ex-students Vindoo Dara Singh, Akshay Kumar, Chunky Pandey, and her neighbour, singer Jaspinder Narula, along with all her former students.

Celebs paying heartfelt tributes

Akshay Kumar shared a throwback picture on his X(formerly Twitter) account along with a heartfelt note that reads, “My first and forever guru. Everything I know about dance, I learnt at your feet, Madhumati ji. Har ada, har expression mein aapki yaad hamesha saath rahegi. Om Shanti 🙏.”

Actor Vindu Dara Singh also took to X to share his condolences, writing, “Rest in peace, our teacher and guide #Madhumati ji. A beautiful life led, filled with love and blessings from so many of us who learnt dancing from this legend.”

Madhumati made a remarkable impact on Indian cinema. She was celebrated as a talented artist and often likened to legendary performers of her era, such as Helen. Some of her notable films include Raja Harishchandra, Ankhen, Tower House, Shikari, and Mujhe Jeene Do.

Born in Maharashtra in 1938, Madhumati started her career as a dancer in 1957 in an unreleased Marathi film. Her birth name was Hutoxi Reporter, and she came from a Parsi family. From a young age, she showed a passion for dance and trained in Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Manipuri, and Kathakali, while also performing in film dances.

At 19, Madhumati married Deepak Manohar, a respected dancer who was much older and already a father of four, having lost his first wife.

Madhumati and Deepak performed together in Sunil Dutt's troupe for Ajanta Arts, entertaining Indian Army personnel on the border. Her final film appearance was in Amar Akbar Anthony (1977). She also taught dance, with students including Akshay Kumar and Govinda during their early years.
