Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, a strong nationwide call for justice has emerged. Many celebrities and public figures have expressed the need for swift justice in the case.
Recently, actress Mallika Sherawat reshared an old statement of her calling India as "regressive nation" which had previously caused a stir. Simultaneously, an old video of Priyanka Chopra mocking Mallika's statement has also resurfaced, adding to the ongoing discussion.
What Priyanka said about Mallika Sherawat over her controversial statement?
At a UNICEF event in 2013, Priyanka Chopra responded to Mallika's comment about the sorry state of women's safety in India by expressing her disagreement. She called it ‘very callous’. She said that "India is a progressive nation, not regressive". The Mary Kom star also highlighted that discussions about educating girls and advancing the country demonstrate progress, and she believed Mallika's statement "misrepresented India's true image" on the global stage.
Priyanka even said that she felt "deeply offended" by the portrayal of India as regressive for women. She described Mallika's remarks as particularly upsetting as an Indian woman. Priyanka concluded by saying, "don't think it's fair".
Mallika Sherawat still stands by her statement amid Kolkata rape and murder case
In 2013, during an interview, Mallika Sherawat made a controversial remark as she said, “So when I enjoy the social freedom in America and go back to India, which is so regressive for women, it's depressing. As an independent woman, it's really depressing.”
Mallika has yet again reposted a clip of her old statement, which also had a mention of the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. In the caption, she reflected on how she was targeted and bullied by certain sections of the Indian press for speaking out against gang rapes and sexual violence in India. She also noted that some women in the press and several Bollywood actresses joined in the public criticism of her for addressing these issues.
