Baruipur:  A 12-year-old girl who was out to buy birthday gift for her friend was allegedly raped and murdered in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, on Sunday. The accused allegedly stuffed the little girl's body in a sack and threw it into a pond after committing the horrific crime.

The outrageous incident unfolded in the Suryapur Haat area of Baruipur.

According to the victim's family, the young girl left her home on Saturday afternoon with plans to purchase a birthday gift. When she failed to return, her frantic family launched a search. The following morning, her lifeless body was tragically discovered floating in a pond, stuffed inside a sack, near her residence.

Four people are suspected to be involved in the crime.

Man Lynched By Angry Mob

News of the girl's death sparked immediate protests in the area. As per reports, a young man suspected of being involved in the girl's death was lynched by local residents. The angry mob allegedly also attacked police officers who tried to bring the situation under control.

As per unconfirmed reports, locals had caught a man on suspicion of being involved in the crime and had handed him over to the police. However, he was later released.

Meanwhile, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee has accused the BJP of fostering a climate where "those accused of heinous crimes appear to believe they enjoy political protection".

“Where political connections seem to influence justice. Where influence appears to speak louder than the rule of law. Where disturbing questions arise over whether political pressure is overshadowing the pursuit of justice. That is the real tragedy behind the Baruipur horror!” he wrote in a post on X.
