Election Commission Extends SIR Deadline In 5 States And 1 Union Territory; No Extension For Bengal
As per the revised schedule, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands have been given time until December 23, 2025 (Tuesday), replacing the earlier deadline of December 18, 2025 (Thursday).
New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday extended the deadline for submission of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across five states and one Union Territory by one week. The extension applies to Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Uttar Pradesh.
The schedule was revised following requests submitted by the respective Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) and the revision is being carried out with January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date.
Under the earlier schedule, the enumeration period for these 6 states/UTs was till December 11 and the earlier date for publication of draft electoral rolls was December 16.
The enumeration period for Goa, Gujarat, Lakshadweep, Rajasthan and West Bengal ended today with no extension given by the Election Commission. The EC added draft electoral roll of these four states will be published on December 16.
Revised schedule
The revised schedule states that instead of December 14, 2025 (Sunday), Tamil Nadu and Gujarat will now submit their SIRs by December 19, 2025 (Friday).
Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands have been given time until December 23, 2025 (Tuesday), replacing the earlier deadline of December 18, 2025 (Thursday).
Uttar Pradesh will submit its SIR on December 31, 2025 (Wednesday). Earlier, it was slated to make the submission on December 26, 2025 (Friday).
Before the latest extension, the EC had revised the schedule for Kerala, where enumeration would end on December 18 and draft electoral roll would be published on December 23.
SIR of electoral rolls
The SIR of the electoral rolls began on November 6 across nine states and 3 Union Territories, attracting condemnation from multiple regions and parties. The first phase of SIR was completed in Bihar in September ahead of the Assembly elections and the exercise covers Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
The possible extension comes amid strong criticism from multiple Opposition parties, who accused the EC of enforcing ‘impractical’ deadlines that were overburdening Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and inconveniencing voters.
Till earlier this week, EC data showed 50.8 crore enumeration forms have already been digitised and around 23.22 lakh forms are still pending. A total of 50.96 crore forms were distributed since the second phase of the SIR began on November 4.
