Mumbai: Fire broke out at Mumbai's underground T2 Airport Metro Station in Andheri East on Wednesday evening. All passengers were evacuated from the spot. As per reports, emergency teams reached the spot as soon as smoke was detected. Authorities said that "nobody was hurt" in the incident. Rescue teams and the Mumbai Metro staff cleared the station and secured the area.

The incident was reported at 4.10 pm which briefly affected services in the underground corridor of the Metro Aqua Line 3 between Aarey JVLR and Cuffe Parade. According to an official, the fire erupted from the technical room of the metro station. The Mumbai fire brigade was alerted at 4.13 pm. Three fire engines and two jumbo tankers reportedly rushed to the site; the flames were brought in control by 4.30 pm.

Firefighters had to combat the flames using breathing apparatus since smoke had permeated the underground station premises. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has described the fire episode as a "minor smoke incident".

"A minor smoke incident was reported at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA)-T2 station today and was promptly addressed by the on-site team," it said in a statement.

The station was evacuated and trains were not allowed to halt at CSMIA-T2 station during the operation, it said, adding that services between Sahar Road and Aarey stations were temporarily affected.

The MMRCL mentioned that all safety protocols were diligently followed and the situation was swiflty brought under control.

Earlier in November 2024, in a similar incident, a fire had broken out in the basement of the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) metro station.
