India confirms talks with Vietnam on the sale of BrahMos missile system.
New Delhi: India has confirmed talks with Vietnam on the sale of BrahMos missile system. This came at the backdrop of the high profile state visit of Vietnman President and General Secretary To Lam's in New Delhi. MEA Secretary (East) P. Kumaran said, “We do talk about a number of platforms, Brahmos platform is one of them.”
The Brahmos missles are being jointly developed by India and Russia. India has earlier sold the supersonic cruise missiles to Philippines and has also signed a contract with Indonesia in March 2026.
According to a Reuters report citing one of its sources, the deal with Vietnam could be worth about Rs 60 billion, which includes training and logistical support. As per geopolitcal experts, India considers Vietnam a key part of its strategy to ensure stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
India-Vietnam Defence Cooperation
India and Vietnam also elevated their relations to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during the state visit of Vietnamese President and General Secretary To Lam. Both sides announced steps to deepen defence, economic, technological, and cultural cooperation.
During their meeting on Wednesday, PM Modi and President To Lam mentioned that defence and security cooperation is a key pillar of the India-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The two countries also welcomed the progress in the implementation of the Defence Lines of Credit extended by India for Vietnam, which have contributed to strengthening Vietnam’s defence capabilities and advancing bilateral defence cooperation.
The leaders expressed satisfaction on the implementation of the bilateral defence agreements, including Mutual Logistics Support Agreement; Memorandum of Agreement on Submarine Search and Rescue Support and Cooperation; and Letter of Intent on Strengthening Defence Industrial Cooperation. The leaders also welcomed the inaugural joint hydrographic survey by the two navies in May 2025 off the coast of Vietnam and agreed to regularly conduct similar exercises in the future.
Vietnam appreciated the training offered by India for Vietnamese defence personnel under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme, through Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force Training Teams at the Telecommunications University (TCU), Naval Academy, Airforce College, Nha Trang towards capacity building; India’s support for the establishment of the Army Software Park at TCU, Nha Trang.
