Throughout the 2026 Assembly election, voters in Panihati saw a candidate unlike any other. Ratna Debnath campaigned with unkempt, uncombed hair-a haunting visual vow she made after her daughter’s brutal rape and murder in August 2024. 

"I will not comb my hair until my daughter gets justice and Mamata Banerjee is dethroned," she had declared. Today, with the TMC’s hold on Panihati broken, her disheveled hair remains a silent, powerful testament to a mother's grief that cannot be groomed away by power.

"I Would Have Given My Daughter's Wedding Gold"

During the emotional interview, Ratna addressed the long-standing rumors of government "offers" that followed the tragedy. Her response was a blistering attack on those who think a child's life has a price tag.

"The day the minister said he could give 10 lakhs from a crowd, I told the media: “It’s not 10 lakhs, I will give him 20 lakhs. I would have given every ornament I made for my daughter's wedding just to have her returned to me."

She revealed that even during the darkest hour -the funeral - she was met with offers of lakhs. "The two of us stood up and said: We don’t want your money. We want our daughter’s thoughts. We want justice."

A Historic Victory Built on Pain

Ratna’s journey from a grieving mother to a legislative powerhouse is nothing short of a miracle in Bengal politics. Despite facing harassment and intimidation while filing her nomination, the people of Panihati stood by her.

The Panihati Mandate:

The Margin: A massive victory of 28,836 votes.

The Defeated: TMC’s Tirthankar Ghosh, ending the party’s dominance in the area since 2011.

The Total: 87,977 citizens chose the "Mother’s Fight" over the ruling party’s machinery.

"If I don’t cook all day, no one says, 'What have you cooked?' Does a person like that need money? Does a person like that need anything?" she asked, tears in her eyes. "We don't want money from anyone. We only want our daughter’s thoughts to be taken care of so other daughters will be safe."
