Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde’s Helicopter Forced into Emergency Return Amid Severe Dust Storm near Kalyan
Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde’s helicopter made a safe emergency landing in Juhu after encountering a storm near Airoli. All passengers are unharmed.
In a close call on Thursday afternoon, a helicopter carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was forced to make an emergency turnaround after flying into hazardous weather conditions. Thanks to the quick thinking of the flight crew, the aircraft returned to Mumbai and landed safely, avoiding a potential mid-air crisis.
A Routine Trip Interrupted by Weather
Deputy CM Shinde had departed from the Mahalaxmi Racecourse helipad at approximately 3:30 pm. He was en route to Murbad in the Thane district to attend a wedding ceremony within the family of a Shiv Sena party office-bearer. However, the journey was cut short just minutes after takeoff. As the helicopter reached the skies above Airoli in Navi Mumbai, the pilot identified a rapidly approaching storm system blocking their flight path.
Pilot’s Presence of Mind Ensures Safety
Recognizing the escalating risk, the pilot immediately alerted the Deputy Chief Minister to the deteriorating conditions. The pilot advised against pushing forward into the storm, suggesting an immediate return to base. Shinde agreed to the diversion, and the pilot executed a prompt course reversal.
“Due to the pilot’s timely alertness and presence of mind, the helicopter was turned back and safely landed at the Pawan Hans helipad in Juhu,” the Deputy CM’s office confirmed in an official statement.
The statement further reassured the public, noting, “No one was injured in the incident, and all those on board, including Deputy CM Shinde, are safe.”

Safe Landing at Juhu
The aircraft touched down without further incident at the Pawan Hans facility in Juhu. Alongside the Deputy CM, the helicopter was carrying key members of his core team, including:
- Prabhakar Kale, Personal Assistant
- Balsingh Rajput, Special Executive Officer
- Vinay Patrudkar, Media Adviser
Context of Recent Aviation Tragedies
The incident has sparked a sense of relief across the state's political circles, especially given the tragic context of recent months. On January 28, the state was shaken by a major aviation disaster that claimed the life of then Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. That crash, which occurred while Pawar was traveling to Baramati in Pune district, resulted in five fatalities, including the Deputy CM and four others on board.
Today's successful emergency landing highlights the critical importance of pilot intuition and safety-first protocols in VIP transport. Following the safe landing in Juhu, the Deputy CM and his staff were reported to be in good spirits.
