Major political confrontation began in West Bengal soon after BJP’s landslide and historic victory in the assembly elections. The BJP won 207 out of 294 seats, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was reduced to 80 seats that ended its 15 year rule. Despite the loss, outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused to resign. Holding a press conference on Tuesday, the TMC supremo said that she does not accept the defeat and claimed her party is the ‘moral winner’.
“I will not resign. I did not lose. We didn’t lose the election. They may defeat us officially, but morally we have won,” she said.
TMC Vs Election Commission
Accusing the Election Commission and BJP of unfair practices to win the elections, key allegations among many levelled on the polling agency by Mamata and team are -
- EVMs were tampered with
- EVMs showed unusually high battery levels opn counting day (80–90%)
- Police officers were changed before elections
- TMC workers were arrested before polling
She also called the Chief Election Commissioner the ‘villain’ of the election and claimed the democratic process was ‘looted’. Banerjee further claimed she was manhandled and ‘kicked in the belly’ during the counting process. She alleged that TMC counting agents were beaten, important documents were snatched, and CCTV cameras were turned off during the incident.
The BJP dismissed all allegations made by Mamata Banerjee, calling them baseless. Party leaders said that her claims are not possible, especially considering her Z+ security cover, and termed her statements as reactions of a defeated leader.
