Dispur: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has finalised the seat-sharing pact for the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam, with the Bharatiya Janata Party set to contest on 89 seats. While the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will fight on 26 seats, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) will contest on 11 constituencies.

The decision was announced after BJP held a meeting of its Assam core group at Union Minister JP Nadda's residence in New Delhi. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP chief Nitin Nabi and Union Minister Sarbanand Sonowal were among those in attendace.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been ruling over Assam since 2016. The party is seeking a third consecutive term in the state. As part of the last leg of the campaigning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold rallies on April 1, 3 and 6.

Pradyot Bordoloi May Contest From Dispur

Former Congress MP Pradyot Bordoloi, who joined BJP earlier in the day, is likely to contest from Dispur on a BJP ticket.

He joined BJP in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia. Accusing Congress of sidelining him, Bordoloi said, adding that there were “multiple issues” within the party. He said, “For me, getting a ticket was not a question of life and death. There were multiple issues. What was important for me was to hold my head high. The Congress party has given me a lot."

"I want to make it very clear that I am in my second term in Lok Sabha, and there are another three years to go. I could have accepted the humiliation if I wanted to remain as an MP. But I decided to leave and work," he added.

There are 126 Assembly constituencies in the state and elections for all of them will be held in a single phase on April 9. The counting of votes is scheduled to take place on May 4.
