'Historic, Decisive Win': Trump Congratulates PM Modi For BJP's Massive Bengal Victory
The BJP's victory in the eastern state marks a major political shift towards right-wing ideology in the state's political journey. The BJP won 207 seats in West Bengal, while the TMC won only 80 seats.
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the ruling party, BJP’s massive sweep in West Bengal on Monday.
“The President congratulates Prime Minister Modi on this recent, historic, and decisive election victory,” White House spokesman Kush Desai reportedly said.
Trump's message came after the BJP secured a landslide victory in West Bengal, for the first time ever, after a prolonged electoral push for more than a decade.
West Bengal was ruled by the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC for 15 years. Prior to this, the state was ruled by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for 35 years till 2011. The BJP's victory in the eastern state marks a major political shift towards right-wing ideology in the state's political journey.
Landmark BJP Victory
The BJP won 207 seats in West Bengal, while the TMC won only 80 seats. The BJP has planned to hold an eleborate swearing-in ceremony on May 9, to mark its first electoral win in the state, it has long wished to rule. Senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari won from both his constituencies, Bhabanipur and Nandigram, even defeating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from her bastion in Kolkata by a margin of 15,105 votes.
‘Lotus in West Bengal’: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated his party workers for their stunning performance in the assembly polls, underlining that the BJP's politics of good governance has triumphed.
"The Lotus blooms in West Bengal! The 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections will be remembered forever. People's power has prevailed and the BJP's politics of good governance has triumphed. I bow to each and every person of West Bengal. The people have given a spectacular mandate to the BJP and I assure them that our Party will do everything possible to fulfil the dreams and aspirations of the people of West Bengal. We will provide a Government that ensures opportunity and dignity to all sections of society," PM Modi said.
Mamata Refuses To Quit
Meanwhile, in a dramatic escalation of political posturing, outgoing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that she has not lost the Assembly polls and hence there arises no question of tendering her resignation. Banerjee said that while the BJP "can defeat Trinamool Congress through the Election Commission" but “morally we (TMC) won the election.”
"I will not resign, I did not lose, I will not go to Raj Bhavan...The question doesn't arise. No. Now, I also want to say that we didn't lose the election. It is their attempt to defeat us. Officially, through the Election Commission, they can defeat us, but morally we won the election," the TMC supremo said.
