As soon as the summer season begins, air coolers are used to provide relief from the heat. As temperatures rise, a cooler becomes an essential household item. However, people often overlook cleaning their coolers before switching them on, which subsequently leads to issues such as dirty water, foul odours and mosquito breeding. If the water in a cooler is not kept clean, it can become the source of various problems. Mosquitoes breed rapidly, particularly during the summer and monsoon seasons, thereby increasing the risk of diseases like dengue and malaria.

How to keep cooler water clean without changing it often?

Using alum (fitkari) is a very easy and effective home remedy for keeping the cooler water clean without having to change it often. Water often remains stagnant in a cooler's tank for extended periods. This creates an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes to breed, as they typically lay their eggs in such still, clear water. Proper cleaning and maintenance are essential to ensure the safe and efficient operation of a cooler over a long period. Adding a small piece of alum to the water in the cooler helps keep it significantly cleaner and effectively mitigates the problem of mosquito breeding.

Why is alum the best choice for coolers?

Makes water clean and transparent: Alum causes dust, dirt and minute particles present in the water to clump together. These particles become heavy, settle at the bottom and leave the water at the surface clean and clear.

Prevents mosquito breeding: Alum purifies the water so that mosquito eggs and larvae are unable to thrive within it. This significantly reduces the problem of mosquito infestation.

Reduces odour: If the water in the cooler emits a strange or foul smell, alum helps to significantly reduce it.

Aids in reducing bacteria: Alum possesses mild antiseptic properties that help in reducing certain harmful bacteria present in the water.

Maintains water quality: With the use of alum, the water remains clean for a longer duration of time. This prevents the cooler pads from deteriorating prematurely and ensures that the air blown out is cooled more effectively.

Tips to use alum in a cooler

Alum should not be used in excessive quantities. A small piece is sufficient for cleaning purposes. Adding more alum than necessary can actually degrade the quality of the water. Additionally, the entire water supply in the cooler should be changed periodically. If the water is not changed or the unit is not cleaned regularly, the cooler can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
