Ugadi, the celebration of New Year in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telengana, falls on March 30 this year, know everything about the celebration.
This year’s Ugadi will be celebrated in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka on March 30. It is festively observed in these regions on the first day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Chaitra. The day is followed by preparation of special dishes that combines Ugadi pachadi, Pulihora and Holige among others. Let’s check out the delicacies you can try.
Ugadi Pachadi
Ugadi Pachadi is a special dish which is made traditionally for Telugu New Year with six states in it. It is made of neem flowers, raw unripe green mango, jaggery, pepper powder, coconut and salt.
Puliyogare
Puliyogare is very popular dish is prepared with kokum, tamarind, lemon or green mango as main souring ingredient, along with a blend of spices, lentils, peanuts and jaggery cooked in oil and mixd with cooked rice and along with fried curry leaves and turmeric.
Bendakaya Vepudu
Bendakaya Vepudu is a stir fry dish made with ladies finger (okra), curry leaves, tempering spices and curry leaves.
Potato Brinjal Curry
Potato Brinjal Curry is a delicious Indian sabji (vegetable dish) made with diced potatoes and eggplant that have been simmered in a spiced onion tomato masala.
Bobbatlu
Bobbatlu is a made of sweet studded flatbread made with channa dal, jaggery, cardamoms and flour.
Paruppu Payasam
Paruppu Payasam is a pudding or payasam made of moong dal, jaggery, ghee & coconut milk. It is healthy since lentils can add protein and nutrients to sweets.
The term Ugadi etymologically translates to "the beginning of a new age", which is very symbolic for an event marking the New Year. Ugadi tends to always fall between the months of March and April. Ugadi is a day for celebration as it also indicates the onset of Spring as the year turns as per the religious calendar.
Several deities are offered prayers on this auspicious day. Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Rama complete the list. While Lord Vishnu and Lord Rama are directly a part of the mythology and lore surrounding Ugadi, Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped for prosperity and fortune, popular themes for the onset of a New Year.
