Bananas ripen quickly during the summer months. This occurs because warm temperatures accelerate their natural ripening process. This phenomenon is attributed to the release of ethylene gas. If you purchase ripe bananas during the summer months and do not consume them quickly, they tend to become excessively soft and mushy. Their peels turn from yellow to black fast. If you wish to prevent bananas from over-ripening or spoiling prematurely, you can adopt the following measures.

How to prevent bananas from over ripening?

– Wrap the stems of the bananas tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This technique delays the ripening of the bananas by at least 4–5 days and helps them stay fresh for a longer duration. This method works by minimising the release of ethylene gas from the bananas, thereby slowing down the rate at which they ripen.

– Always store ripe bananas in a cool, dry place. If exposed to direct sunlight or kept in a warm environment, the bananas will soften and spoil much faster. Ideally, keep them in a cool, dimly lit area of the kitchen that also offers good air circulation.

– If you wish, you can also store ripe bananas in the refrigerator. While the peels may turn black, the fruit inside remains perfectly intact. However, if the bananas are still green (unripe), placing them in the refrigerator will prevent them from ripening at all.

– Never store bananas together with other fruits. Fruits such as mangoes and apples also release ethylene gas. Therefore, keep bananas separated from them to prevent them from ripening too quickly.

– If you have purchased bananas in a bunch, you can separate them and store them individually. Doing this will prevent ripe bananas from spoiling quickly and ensure they ripen gradually over a period of time.
