Before the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA next year, South Africa's Faf Du Plessis has made hints that he may make a return to the national team. Despite the fact that he had never formally retired from white-ball cricket, Du Plessis failed to make it into the South Africa squad in the last two T20 World Cups. It should be noted that Du Plessis led South Africa in T20 World Cup campaigns in 2014 and 2016.

Faf du Plessis is contemplating a South Africa return

Faf du Plessis recently revealed that he is in contact with South Africa's new white ball coach Rob Walter, and the subject of his return has been brought up.

“I believe that I can return to international cricket,” du Plessis told the broadcaster of the Abu Dhabi T10 league.

“We have been speaking about this for the last couple of years. It’s just figuring out the balance of the T20 World Cup next year. It’s certainly something we have spoken about with the new coach.”

Du Plessis last put on the South African outfit in 2021 during the Test series against Pakistan. In the limited overs space, he represented South Africa against England in a T20 game in 2020.

Coach says he is in the reckoning

While he is away from international cricket, the run-flow from his bat has remained constant. In the IPL 2023, he finished just behind Shubman Gill, who was the Orange Cap winner. Thus, as far as the form is concerned, it could be gauged that he is ready to take the field for the Proteas again. Moreover, the coach has stated that he is in the reckoning.

“Given that some of our frontline bowlers are missing out and there are guys – let me throw it out there just to create some media hype – like Faf (du Plessis) and Rilee (Rossouw) as well as Quinny (De Kock) that could well be considered for a T20 World Cup and then also the SA20 that happens next year – 80% of the side picks itself but there is definitely a space for other guys to get themselves into the conversation,” Walter said.
