Ravi Shastri made a huge statement about Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the IND vs SL 1st T20I

As Suryakumar Yadav gets ready to lead the squad in the forthcoming series against Sri Lanka, former squad India head coach Ravi Shastri has examined his T20I leadership style. Former Team India all-rounder Shastri feels Suryakumar is suitable for the captaincy position and that his leadership approach would capture his vibrant nature.

Mumbai-born Suryakumar was selected over Hardik Pandya to lead the T20I team, after Rohit Sharma who left the format last month after India's T20 World Cup triumph. The right-handed batsman has guided India in eight T20Is during his past leadership tour, guaranteeing five wins with one match having no result.

Shastri underlined in an ICC Review episode that Suryakumar is a natural match-winner and that his captaincy should reflect his aggressive batting approach. He remarked:

"We know he is street smart...he is one of the best T20 players in the world at the moment. He is a match-winner on his own, walks into the team day in, day out in that format of the game on his own steam, so I think it's not a bad idea at all.

"I think it'll [captaincy style] be much like his personality, the way he plays the game. He'll be thinking very quickly and the fact that he knows all these players, even the senior players, I think he'll be in a great position to handle the team."

"One thing that he (Suryakumar) will have to learn from his side, is what are the strengths of his bowlers and what are the limitations. I never say a bowler has a weakness, I say a limitation and then there are strengths. And then focus on the right things and set fields accordingly. I think that's what he will have to learn."

After the three T20Is against Sri Lanka, the Indian cricket team will also participate in a three-match One Day International (ODI) series. The inaugural T20I is scheduled to occur on Saturday, July 27th. This will mark Gautam Gambhir’s first project as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team.
