IPL 2025: Kolkata Knight Riders Appoint Ajinkya Rahane As Their Skipper, Venkatesh Iyer To Be His Deputy

The Kolkata Knight Riders have announced that Team India cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has been named as the new skipper for the franchise. The announcement also revealed that Venkatesh Iyer has been elected as the vice captain of the defending champions. The revelation was made by franchise CEO Venky Mysore over their social media platforms.

The shocking exit of Shreyas Iyer when the IPL retention lists were caused a storm. Iyer's release caused a stir among the fans, as many were concerned upon letting go of a credible cricketer and skipper who had led them to their third IPL title. After a prolonged wait, the suspense over the Kolkata Knight Riders' new skipper has finally come to an end, with with Ajinkya Rahane being announced as the skipper. Venkatesh Iyer was elected as the Kolkata Knight Riders' vice-captain, and their tenure will begin from the IPL 2025 season. 

“We are delighted to have someone like Ajinkya Rahane, who brings his experience and maturity as a leader. Also, Venkatesh Iyer has been a franchise player for KKR and brings a lot of leadership qualities. We are confident that they will combine well as we start the defense of our title,” Venky Mysore, CEO of KKR said while making the announcement.

Ajinkya Rahane Expresses Delight After Becoming KKR's Skipper

Ajinkya Rahane accepts the leadership role and expressed that the Kolkata Knight Riders has an excellent and balanced squad this season. The new skipper added that he looks forward on working as a group and looks ready to take up the challenge and defend the title.

“It’s an honour to be asked to lead KKR, which has been one of the most successful franchises in the IPL. I think we have an excellent and balanced squad. I look forward to working with everyone and taking up the challenge of defending our title,” Rahane said as per the statement released by KKR.

The Kolkata Knight Riders will begin their IPL 2025 campaign with the season opener against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the iconic Eden Gardens on Saturday, March 22, 2025.
