ICC Champions Trophy 2025: We already know the semi-finalists, but we are yet to know who plays who and the speculation around that is exciting. India plays either South Africa or Australia in the semi-final, that is confirmed. But who? In fact, who would India like to play in the semi-final? Would they have preference knowing what they have to do against New Zealand to play a certain team? No, in all probability, but still who would they like to play in the knockout is something former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar weighed in on.

As per the legend, India would be better off if they play the mighty Australians. Claiming that both South Africa and Australia are equally formidable, Gavaskar reckoned India know the Aussies a little better than the Proteas.

‘Here it’s now make or break’

“Both teams are formidable teams, make no mistake. There’s no such team that India will say, because now they know, they’ve come to the knockout stages. Here it’s now make or break, so I don’t think they would prefer to have any team,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

“Maybe Australia because they’ve played Australia, they know Australia little bit better than South Africa whom they last played in the T20 World Cup 2024 final,” further explained Gavaskar.

Team India Likely XI

As per reports, Team India could rest a couple of players ahead of the semi-final which would hurt the team's chances against the Kiwis. The Indian captain Rohit Sharma and premier pacer Mohammed Shami may be rested as per reoports for the clash. Both players picked up respective niggles during the game against arch-rivals Pakistan. Rishabh Pant and Arshdeep Singh are in line as likely replacements.

Do you think India would beat New Zealand? At ICC events, NZ have historically had the wood over India. The Indian side would like to change that.
