Mansukh Mandaviya Condemns TMC & INC Leaders' Comments On Rohit Sharma
Following Congress leader Shama Mohamed's disparaging tweets about Indian captain Rohit Sharma, a massive controversy erupted. The TMC has also joined in as MP Sougata Ray echoed the INC spokesperson's crude comments, where she fat-shamed the Indian cricketer. Rohit, who has led Team India in ODIs and Tests, recently defeated New Zealand by 44 runs to finish the Champions Trophy group stage unbeaten. The INC spokesperson went so far as to say that the T20 World Cup winner was the least impressive captain Team India has ever had. Amid the controversy, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya chastised the Congress and TMC for their disparaging remarks and urged them to leave the sportspersons alone.
"Congress and TMC should leave sportspersons alone as they are fully capable of handling their professional lives. Remarks made by leaders from these parties, indulging in body shaming and questioning an athlete’s place in the team, are not only deeply shameful but also outright pathetic. Such comments undermine the hard work and sacrifices that our sportspersons make to represent the country on the global stage," Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted on 'X' [Formerly Twitter].
Devajit Saikia Urges Politicans To Leave The Sportspersons Alone
Apart from the Sports Minister, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has taken notice of Congress leader Shama Mohamed's remarks and criticised them, stating that it is regrettable for a responsible individual to make such a futile assertion when the Indian Cricket Team is participating in such a significant ICC tournament.
"Very unfortunate for a responsible person to pass such a trivial comment when the team is in the midst of such a marquee ICC tournament. It may have demoralizing effect on an individual or the team," Devajit Saikia said, as quoted by PTI.
After remaining undefeated in the group stage, Team India will be in action at the Champions Trophy Semifinal on Tuesday, March 04, 2025, where they will face off against Australia at the Dubai International Stadium in the UAE.
