Years later, he is now considered one of the greatest cricketers and is often considered the greatest ever to grace the 50-over format of the game.
Kohli, who is famously called the ‘Chase Master’, will be stepping onto his 300th ODI match during Team India's final group stage match of the ongoing Champions Trophy against New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium on March 2. The whole world will eagerly be waiting to see the 36-year-old donning the Blue jersey.
Virat Kohli 's Numbers In ODI Format
The right-handed batter made his debut for Team India in the ODI format on August 18, 2008, against Sri Lanka in Dambulla. Since then, his career graph has never seen a downfall. Kohli amassed 14085 runs in 299 50-over matches and 287 innings at a strike rate of 93.41. In his 17 years of playing in the ODI format, the star batter smashed 51 centuries and 73 fifties.
In times of struggle for Team India, it has consistently been 'King Kohli' who has steered the 'Men in Blue' back on course, earning him the reputation of a big match player.
Virat Kohli's Mind-Boggling Stats Against New Zealand
Kohli has great numbers against New Zealand in the ODI format, and once again, he is expected to shine against the Kiwis. The 36-year-old smashed 1645 runs from 31 matches against New Zealand at a strike rate of 58.75. He also has six centuries and nine fifties against the Black Caps. Coincidently, Kohli's 200th ODI match was also against the Kiwis, where he scored a century.
The 'Chase Master' is also running behind his idol, Sachin Tendulkar's record of being the most run-scorer in the ODI format. Tendulkar had registered 18426 runs from his 463 matches at a strike rate of 86.23. Kohli is 4341 runs behind Tendulkar, standing in the third place on the most run-getters in ODIs' list.
The last time Kohli faced New Zealand was in the ODI World Cup 2023, where the 36-year-old shattered Sachin Tendulkar's record of most centuries in the 50-over format with 51 tons. The talisman Indian batter is also the fastest cricketer to reach 8000 runs in ODIs, he took 175 innings to achieve the milestone. The stalwart also took just 299 innings to smash 14000 runs in the 50-over format.

Kohli also holds the record for most ODI tons against a single opponent, with 10 centuries in just 56 innings against Sri Lanka. The 'big-match player' has always proved himself in the ICC tournaments. He is currently the second-highest run scorer in the ODI World Cup with 1795 runs. Meanwhile, in the Champions Trophy, Kohli is the eighth highest run-getter in the ICC tournament, with 651 runs from 15 matches at a strike rate of 90.16.
Kohli started the Champions Trophy 2025 on a slightly off note, scoring just 22 runs from 38 balls against Bangladesh on February 20. However, he revived himself in the high-voltage match against Pakistan , where he slammed an unbeaten century, helping India to beat Mohammad Rizwan 's side by six wickets.
With Team India being already qualified for the semi-final of the ongoing tournament. It will be interesting to see Kohli's fast-paced batting style.
