FIFA World Cup 2026: Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as head coach of the German national football team following their sluggish performance at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Jürgen Klopp Front-Runner To Replace Nagelsmann
According to a report by Sky Sports, Nagelsmann has stepped down from his role with Germany. The report also claimed that former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is ready to take over and replace Nagelsmann.
Earlier on Thursday, July 2, Nagelsmann held a lengthy meeting with officials from the German Football Association to discuss Germany’s shocking Round of 32 exit. The report stated that Nagelsmann’s future with the national team was decided during the three-and-a-half-hour meeting.
The meeting was attended by DFB president Bernd Neuendorf, managing director Andreas Rettig, sporting director Rudi Völler, and Bundesliga president Hans-Joachim Watzke.
The German Football Association asked Nagelsmann to submit his resignation. He had taken charge as head coach of the German national team in September 2023 on a contract running until 2028.
During his tenure, Nagelsmann oversaw 37 matches, recording 23 victories, six draws, and eight defeats. Germany’s early exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026 mirrors his previous stint at Bayern Munich, where he was sacked in March 2023 after less than two years in charge due to poor results.
Here's How Germany Performed At FIFA World Cup 2026
Germany made a magnificent start to the FIFA World Cup 2026, clinching a commanding 7-1 win over Curacao. In their second match, Germany defeated Ivory Coast 2-1. However, the team suffered a humiliating defeat to Ecuador in their final group-stage fixture.
Die Mannschaft advanced to the knockout stage after topping Group E with six points. In the Round of 32, Germany faced Paraguay. While many expected a comfortable German victory, Paraguay stunned them with a thrilling win in a penalty shootout.
